The slightly more astute/anal/bored among you will have noticed that the individual entry archives have now moved from Movable Type's rather useless default of /ec/mtarchives/nnnnnn.shtml#nnnnnn to /ec/mtarchives/yyyy/mm/dd/entry_title_here/index.shtml#nnnnnn, which is all well and good were it not for the fact that the "/index.shtml#nnnnnn" bit looks like a complete eyesore.
Anway, this looks useful: Future-proof URLs in Movable Type, which will help in removing those silly filenames and anchors. Only it's just past midnight, I'm a little tired and don't particularly want to embark on that journey just yet.
Oh, and Phil Gyford's .htaccess redirect trick deserves a mention, too.

If you're using individual entry archives (which, of course, you are) the internal page anchor is superflous, and can (I'd argue should) be removed.
I do this by having something much like the following for my individual entry permalinks:
<a href="<$MTEntryLink$>" title="Permanent link to '<$MTEntryTitle$>'">Permanent page for this entry</a>

I'd prefer for the /index.shtml to be stripped out, too, so that's on the to-do list. As is a /rss/ redirect so I can find out how many people are coming in from the feeds.

I'm a little curious as to why your building a separate directory for each individual archive entry. I prefer to have my urls look something like this:
I also archive by month, so going to .../2003/08/ will get you all the entries from that month.
Regardless, here's what your individual archive template might look like (MT Main Menu > Your Weblog Editing Menu > Configuration > Archiving)
If you want to do monthly archiving, here ya go:

The directories mainly because a user shouldn't have to bother with filenames. It also means I can change from using, say, shtmls to phps to whatever transparently and no one (should) notice.
Having the monthly archives at /yyyy/mm/ is on the to-do list, probably sometime after I get round to switching hosts.
