In fairness to The Register, they did publish a correction/update. And anyway, according to their updated story there /was/ a problem with the .org WhoIs server, just the VeriSign one rather than the PIR one.
At worst, El Reg is guilty of picking up a story and running with it before proper analysis - but then, most news organisations do that from time to time.
I can't help but suspect that the increase in the blogosphere's recent negative coverage of The Register's news content is in some way related to The Register's recent negative coverage about blogs. ;)
