iCan't

So, I downloaded iTunes 4. See, Apple has a new Music Store:

The iTunes Music Store is not available in your country yet. You will be able to browse music and listen to previews, but you won't be able to purchase music unless your billing address is in the United States.

Sigh. I would like to spend money, please. Anyway. What Ben said.

Yup - what a bummer. Um - how about iTunes sharing then? Am I reading this wrong, or can I share my music with anyone?

iTunes 4 will let you share your songs through Rendezvous--they're not copied to the listening computers, they're streamed to them. Because it only works over Rendezvous, those other computers have to be on the same local network as yours: no streaming to the other side of the 'net. There is, of course, nothing stopping you from just sending the files.

" If you know a computer's IP address, you can also see shared music on that computer even if it isn't in the same subnet. (The computer you're looking for also needs to have iTunes 4 and Mac OS X version 10.2.4 installed.)"

"To see the shared music on a computer that is not in the same network subnet as your computer, choose Advanced > "Connect to Shared Music," then enter the IP address for the computer."

I suppose Rendezvous is between the lines there somewhere. Couldn't be quite as simple as I had hoped!

Ooh, I'm pleasantly wrong! Well, that's reassuring. Rendezvous is just used for autodiscovery of music on your local network, then, and you can override it. That's cool.

Adam Curry (who lives in Amsterdam) also wants the store to work outside the US. So does Ben Hammersley (UK). So does Dan Hon (Scotland). Joi Ito (Japan) has to trick the system every time - it seems that they didn't really consider the case of people ...
