    I *really* like the 3D-from-2D effect seen in the Seven Ages of Rock titles. Found a basic tutorial (though the attached sample movie is a little rough in comparison) at http://toolfarm.com/tutorials/trees.html - so a pretty time-intensive effect, but great results.
